WEEK 6- Research your own play

Hamlet
What is the play about? When was it first performed? Find a contemporary production of the play you can get an idea of and research it in terms of concept, style, design, casting. Give some attention to your own character and their role in the play.

Hamlet is about a young prince who is struggling to come to terms with his fathers death. He quickly learns that is father was murdered and sets out to revenge the killer. There is heartbreak, pain, depression, angst and fire in this play.

Hamlet stems from a danish history which is recorded the ancient legend of Amleth, Prince of Denmark, Shakespeare sets Hamlet in the mid to late 1500's after the protestant Reformation of 1517. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, was studying at the protestant university of Wittenberg, the university of the reformer Martin Luther. Being Protestant sets up the internal and external conflict with his catholic fathers ghost that fuels the tragedy. Hamlet is a play in which the fight over the country ultimately leads to the country being taken over by foreign power. Some critics suggest that Shakespeare was warning England not to repeat the struggle over the throne that occurred after the death of Elizabeth I'S father as it would leave the country weak.

Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre

This version of Hamlet was extremely modernised. There was an excellent use of multimedia in the show- there were television screens around stage at the start to show the ghost in the opening scene. The scene where they put on a play to catch the King out was also done through a clever use of multimedia. I loved the modernised set- there was a glass door at the back of the stage and behind it some key scenes were shown but not heard. It was beautiful. The costume and set was also very modernised.
